Farm Animal Studies

Society teaches us that cats and dogs are pets and other animals are food, pests, or dangerous.  I have learned recently that all animals desire love and all animals feel pain and loss. Farm animals do not have the same federal protection from abuse that house pets do. Farm animals suffer greatly in factory farms and lead short, painful lives and most never see the light of day. Big agribusiness doesn’t want you to know that these animals suffer immensely, and doesn’t want you to care.  I think it is important for everyone to know animals personally. So often consumer culture only allows us to see things from one perspective, theirs. I don’t think you can see an animal as anything other then its own being, with its own personality after knowing one.

Civilization is not Sustainable

“Ninety percent of the large fish in the ocean are gone. Ninety-seven percent of the world’s native forests have been cut. There are 2 million dams just in the United States. Once-mighty flocks of passenger pigeons are gone. Islands full of great aucks, gone. Rich runs of salmon, gone. Gone. Gone. Gone. The oceans are filled with plastic. Every stream in the United States is contaminated with carcinogens. The world is being killed, and this is the response? Not only am I angry, not only am I disgusted, I am also deeply, deeply sorrowful. And I am deeply ashamed. We need to act differently. ”

Derrick JensenWhat We Leave Behind

These paintings are dedicated to Geoff Daly of Nashua, NH who worked tirelessly to preserve 33 acres of land from development. This land came to be known as Parcel F. We mourn the loss of this once protected land, a watershed, including a rare kettle bog.

Berkshire Maple

This painting is on a really dynamic piece of glass. It has a texture almost replicating the bark of a tree. I was inspired first by the glass, then by the weather that day. I painted this on my birthday when we had a much needed heavy snowfall. March is one of my favorite months.  I love spring popping through the snow cover and everything starts flowing, including the maples.  March marks the end of winter and promises warmer spring days ahead.
